Gardening on the Deck

For those that have been to my house, you know that the backyard is the courtyard and it sometimes looks a little overgrown and needs some tending. I don't have time for that yard and though I wish to see it revived into a tropical/urban oasis, for now the apple tree and its surrounding, natural growing buddies, will have to suffice. Its actually kind of nice in its raw, non-pristine state. The grass generally stays cut, so that's the biggest thing!

some more plants! green=happy

Having said that, there has been no short effort in the nurturing of my plant friends on the deck. I talk to them. They talk to me. You might think I'm joking, but there was a time when a couple of my plants weren't really thriving. They weren't dying, but they just seemed a bit stagnant in their growth. I figured they too, were coming off the winter blues and just needed some time to catch up. Well, that wasn't it at all. What they really wanted was to be closer to each other and rearranged.

It was becoming clear that some plants enjoyed the energy of some more than others. I began the game of flora-roulette. And you know, it is true. Where one plant "told" me that he wanted to go live by the aloe plant and actually have his leaves touch her, I obliged, without question. After all, how do you talk back to a plant?

In quiet reverence, I began shuffling the plants around and asked if everyone was pleased with my efforts. Though no one jumped up to express dismay, I must take their silence as acceptance, if not appreciation!

the aloe plant and new friends!

A week has passed since I rearranged the various green-armed beasts and I must say that there has been a noticeable change. There was one plant (I really need to learn what it is that I am growing) that prior to this relocation effort, was hanging out, pretty much not really growing, just maintaining. I knew this little guy could grow and was really struggling with why??! His soil seemed fine, he looked fine-- he just wasn't growing.

I moved him, per his request, next to the aloe plant and again, per request, placed his leaves over top and somewhat intertwined with the aloe's beefy stalks. And within just a few days, the stagnant plant seemed to gain vibrancy and started some new growths! He really did want to be moved and live next to the aloe!

It was the most amazing transformation and listening to all the plants and arranging them accordingly, everyone seems happy, green and eager to greet me as I walk in my front door.

I have two new babies as well. I was recently entrusted with the care of two little African Violet plants. And so far, they are outside with the 'gang' and they've already perked up and well, I can't wait to see what happens!

What a joy this has brought into my life. Thanks mom!
